The Utility Workers Union of America, AFL-CIO (UWUA) represents thousands of professional and technical members working in the electric, gas, water and nuclear industries across the United States. 

Professional workers in today’s utilities are confronting challenges to their careers brought about by deregulation, absentee ownership, changing technology and our new economy.  Corporate owners have stated quite openly and publicly that their only responsibility is to the shareholder.  The old paradigm of working hard and taking care of the company, because the company will take care of you, is just no longer true. As professional/ technical employees we have to recognize this new dynamic and accept responsibility for our families and ourselves.  Many of our peers are enhancing their professional autonomy, integrity and personal and family security by forming and joining unions. 

Recent headlines, citing Enron, Polaroid, and Value Jet are examples of corporate leadership gone astray. Their actions and those of other corporate leaders have caused thousands of hardworking, dedicated professionals to lose most, if not everything, through no fault of their own.

No executive, or company officer would dedicate his or her intellect, knowledge, skills and abilities without a contract to protect the family’s welfare.  Why would you?  Is your family’s protection any less important?  You can provide your family and yourself the protection of a legal and binding contract by forming a union and participating in the collective bargaining process.
